Stating that many psychiatric diseases, especially depression, affect sexual life, experts pointed out that one out of every three people has sexual dysfunction at least once in their lifetime.
Psychiatrist Assist. Assoc. Dr. Dilek Meltem Taşdemir Erinç made important evaluations about sexual dysfunction.

Diseases negatively affect sexual life

“Cardiovascular system diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, heart failure, chronic kidney failure, liver diseases, respiratory failures, some genetic diseases ( Structural and congenital diseases of the penis, diseases of the female genital organs), diabetes, thyroid diseases, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, spinal cord injuries, tumors, certain drugs, previous surgeries (prostate and intra-abdominal surgeries) and large vessel surgeries. may cause dysfunction.
Psychiatric diseases cause sexual dysfunction
Many psychiatric diseases, especially depression; anxiety disorder, performance anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, personality traits, body image disorders, phobias or avoidance, sexual perversions, marital problems, fear of pregnancy, grief and life that may be stressful events, any element attributed to gender roles may be the cause of sexual dysfunction.”
What are sexual dysfunctions?

1. Desire disorders: Decreased sexual desire disorder, sexual aversion disorder
2. Sexual arousal disorders: Female sexual arousal disorder, male erectile dysfunction
3. Problems with orgasm: Male and female orgasm disorder, premature ejaculation, pain during sexual intercourse or vaginismus, sexual dysfunctions can be listed.”

“In cross-cultural studies, it has been found that sexual problems are experienced at different rates in different cultures and countries; However, it can be said that it is ‘common’ in common.” Erinç stated that in the evaluation of many studies, it was determined that 1 out of every 3 people had sexual dysfunction at least once in any period of their sexual life, and concluded his words as follows:
“Therefore, it can be said that the risk population is ‘young adulthood’. Particular periods in which physiological and bodily changes of life occur, such as adolescence, pregnancy, puerperium, menopause, deserve special attention in terms of sexual functions and sexual education.
The most important source of sexual problems in Turkey: Lack of education
In a study conducted in our country, it was determined that the most important source of sexual problems was illiteracy and ignorance with 62%. Therefore, we can say that individuals of all ages and genders who are deprived of sexual education are at risk. For example; Issues such as unplanned pregnancies, fear of sexually transmitted diseases that can be solved by education, taking precautions beforehand, and having knowledge about the precautions prevent possible sexual dysfunction. Sexual life problems can be solved by correcting the myths, false beliefs, misinformation and conditioning about sexuality.”
